Did you vote Make It for the Swell magazine Rack? If so, you might also like the Prazo Rack. Like the Swell Rack, it is made of molded plywood and mounts to the wall, but that is where the similarities end. The Prazo Rack is all about storage and display. It holds any cylindrical object that fits with in the opposing holes in the sides of the unit. Store magazines, towels, wine, you get the picture.

The clock has come a long way since the sun dial, and designer Marko Vuckovic thinks it should go a little bit further. The 3 hands on the traditional analog clock are stayed and redundant to Vuckovic, who looks to planetary orbits for clock inspiration. His version of the clock conceals all numbers unnecessary in reading the current time by hiding them behind rotating discs.

The Japanese designed Zumi Stool set the bar for origami inspired occasional stools. The Triangle Stool by Elena Damm is a noteworthy follow up. Her version of the origami stool is bold and paper-thin (as any origami inspired piece should be). The three folded sections create a dynamic geometric form suitable for any living room, kid’s room, or office.

The nesting table is the Russian stacking doll of furniture; a miniature table is neatly tucked inside a slightly larger version, tucked inside a slightly larger version. The nesting table is a traditional concept that has appeared ever since space saving storage was first conceived. Modernists tend to avoid such fussy design concepts as the nesting table because you cannot store items on the stacked table tops and the floor space in front must remain clear in order to slide out the smaller tables.

In an attempt to create a modern version of this age old design solution, Designer Elena Damm presents the Expanding Side Table. The table incorporates drawers, and stainless steel runners to help with storage issues and make pulling out the nested tables more convenient. A Space Invaders Inspired Couch

Designer Igor Chak created a couch concept that’s out of this world. This pixal-perfect sofa bears a close resemblance to the graphics from Space Invaders, the classic video game from Tomohiro Nishikado. It doesn’t look exactly like the evil aliens from the game, but the small square eyes and wing-like legs are a good approximation. That said, I certainly prefer this look to an exact replica from the game, as it might push the kitsch factor a little too high.

A Hurricane-Proof Museum

Hurricane Irene’s cooldown just spared New Yorkers from a devastating disaster. However, the threat of catastrophic cyclones is very real to much of the US. While hurricane shelters are often spare and ugly, in St. Petersburg, citizens can hide in the beautiful new Salvador Dali museum.

Filled with unbelievable, swirling staircases and billowing glass walls, the museum is designed to mimic Dali’s surrealist landscapes. It also is built to withstand winds up to 165 (!) miles per hour. I can’t think of a place I’d rather be when the next category 5 hits.
