The nesting table is the Russian stacking doll of furniture; a miniature table is neatly tucked inside a slightly larger version, tucked inside a slightly larger version. The nesting table is a traditional concept that has appeared ever since space saving storage was first conceived. Modernists tend to avoid such fussy design concepts as the nesting table because you cannot store items on the stacked table tops and the floor space in front must remain clear in order to slide out the smaller tables.

In an attempt to create a modern version of this age old design solution, Designer Elena Damm presents the Expanding Side Table. The table incorporates drawers, and stainless steel runners to help with storage issues and make pulling out the nested tables more convenient. In the pantheon of nesting table designs, where does the Expanding Side Table stand? Let us know what you think by voting “make it” or “drop it” for the Expanding Side Table.

If you’re anything like you me, you like to separate work from play, but your dining table often turns into a craft station in between meals. The 50/50 Table by Djordje Zivanovic just might be the solution. Half solid pine and half durable plastic, the table with split personalities can handle dinner parties and homework simultaneously.

The mobile device sector of product development has never been more relevant and ripe for design advancement. The ZEN Laptop Stand by Claudia Bignoli addresses the problem of ergonomic positioning of a laptop computer while working away from your desk. By managing heat flow, it simultaneously aids laptop processing and user comfort.

The ZEN Laptop Stand is designed with simplicity in mind. The straight-forward construction and easy assembly reflects this. Three molded plywood sections use slots to lock together and the computer roosts atop rubber strips on the top edge of the vertical supports. If you have ever used your computer while seated on your couch or lying in bed, then you know the significance of this real-world solution. Vote Make It for the ZEN Laptop Stand to support this ingenious design idea.

Designer Igor Chak created a couch concept that’s out of this world. This pixal-perfect sofa bears a close resemblance to the graphics from Space Invaders, the classic video game from Tomohiro Nishikado. It doesn’t look exactly like the evil aliens from the game, but the small square eyes and wing-like legs are a good approximation. That said, I certainly prefer this look to an exact replica from the game, as it might push the kitsch factor a little too high.

Hurricane Irene’s cooldown just spared New Yorkers from a devastating disaster. However, the threat of catastrophic cyclones is very real to much of the US. While hurricane shelters are often spare and ugly, in St. Petersburg, citizens can hide in the beautiful new Salvador Dali museum.

Filled with unbelievable, swirling staircases and billowing glass walls, the museum is designed to mimic Dali’s surrealist landscapes. It also is built to withstand winds up to 165 (!) miles per hour. I can’t think of a place I’d rather be when the next category 5 hits.
