The Oscar Statuette

Oscar Statuette The Oscar StatuetteOn Sunday night, you watched the Oscars.  But did you actually look at the “Oscars?” That is, how much attention did you pay to the actual award itself? The homepage for the Oscars has a nice rundown of the history of the award and its specs. For example, did you know that the statue depicts “a statuette of a knight standing on a reel of film gripping a crusader’s sword?”

George Stanley sculpted the award in 1928. The Oscar statue may be a big deal, but it’s small in size compared to his other work. One of his larger projects was the “Muse’s Fountain” at the Hollywood Bowl, shown below.

He also sculpted Sir Isaac Newton for the Astronomer’s Monument, shown at right.
